Labyrinthitis
* Inflammatory process involving the inner ear
o infectious vs. non-infectious
o generalized vs. circumscribed
o acquired vs. congenital
o isolated vs. systemic
Pathogenesis
* Meningogenic
o spread through IAC or cochlear aqueduct
* Tympanogenic
o spread through round or oval windows
* Hematogenic
o spread through vascular channels
Bacterial Infections
* Toxic Labyrinthitis
o sterile inflammation
o bacterial toxins penetrate perilymphatic spaces
o mild hearing loss or mild vestibular loss
o usually resolves without sequelae
* Suppurative Labyrinthitis
o bacterial invasion of the inner ear
o intense inflammatory reaction
o progresses along four pathologic stages
o medical emergency
